H.E. Ambassador Gordon H. Bristol

Born 29 January 1957 in Bonny, Rivers State, Nigeria, H.E. Gordon H. Bristol holds a Political Science degree from the University of Lagos (1979) and a Master's (M. Phil) degree in International Relations from the University of Cambridge, UK (1984).

 

He began his diplomatic career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, serving as Third Secretary in the Department of Administration (1980-81) and the Department of Finance (1981-82), then as Second Secretary in the Department of International Economic Cooperation.

 

He held the duties of Second Secretary at the Embassy of Nigeria in Vienna from 1982-83, and was the Personal Assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1985-86. He served as Second Secretary on Nigeria's Permanent Mission to the United Nations (1986-87), before taking up the concurrent duties of First Secretary, Special Assistant to the Ambassador, and Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (1990). He was an Advisor to the Special Assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs (1991-94), before being named Counsellor at the Nigerian Embassy in Stockholm (1994-98).

 

He returned to the MFA to serve from 1998 to 1999 as Minister-Counsellor, Head of the Planning, Evaluation and Monitoring Division, and Head of the Secretariat for Consultative Bodies for Political Matters in the Department of Planning, Research and Statistics. In 2000 he was promoted to the rank of Foreign Affairs Officer category 1 and Minister Resident. He was the Special Assistant to the Special Advisor to the President for International Relations (1999-2001), and Special Assistant to the President's Principal Secretary (2001-05). He is also the author of several works on Nigeria, international relations, African development and the media.

 

H.E. Gordon H. Bristol held the duties of the Nigerian Consul General in Douala, Cameroon from 2005 to 2008, when he was named to serve as the Ambassador of Nigeria to France.
